The title of this review may be misleading. Truth be told, this was our 6th stay at Surfsong, and our second review of this truly wonderful place. While we travel to other destinations during the year, Surfsong has become a special place to come back to each year.
The property is gated and private, and each of the villas blends into the nature around it. We have previously stayed in the Surfside Villa and the Seascape Villa and enjoyed both of them very much. For this trip with another couple, we stayed in the Pool House Villa, a roomy, quiet villa with two generous master bedroom suites, sharing a generous sized kitchen, dining room and living room. With an additional outdoor dining area overlooking a private pool with an outdoor patio with a grill, table with umbrella and lounge chairs, the Pool House is perfect for families or couples.
A few steps away and you are on Surfsong’s beautiful and private beach, at times feeling like no one else is around. While there are many beautiful beaches to see on the island, the private beach at Surfsong is quite special, making it unnecessary to leave. Paddle boards, kayaks, snorkel equipment, lounge chairs, all you have to do is ask.
Cate and Mark Stephenson, the owners, have made many positive changes and improvements to the resort over the years, while continuing to maintain the tranquility and beauty of this very special place. One of the best changes was opening The Courtyard at Surfsong this past year, a fine dining destination that serves dinner nightly, and brunch on the weekends. Coming to Tortola via Manhattan, Chef Dave is an amazing addition to an already-wonderful destination. (You can find my review of his gastro creativity in another review entitled “Gastro Experience.”) Over the years, we have enjoyed the best restaurants on the island, but I am not exaggerating by saying Chef Dave and the Courtyard are now pretty much alone at the very top of that list.
While the setting of Surfsong is romantic, elegant and magical, it’s the people that truly make it special. From the owners and management (special shout out to Simon and Chris, manager and assistant manager respectively) to the housecleaning staff, and everyone in between (Laura, Paige and Orlando stand out as well), the Surfsong team is personable, friendly and knowledgeable: and they are around, or not, as much as you want. Anything you need is truly just a phone call away. Advice on sightseeing, jeep rental, extra towels, making plans to sail over to another island (even an unexpected visit to the hospital by one of the members of our group), they gladly take care of everything, and anything. A compliment to Cate and Mark, the majority of the people working at Surfsong are the same people we met 6 years ago when we first started visiting Surfsong. That is rare indeed.
Feeling refreshed after our wonderful stay, but depressed to be back in the cold, we can’t wait to book our next visit.
